Pre-Report/Diagnosis Предварительные обследования/Диагноз

A five year old, male Border Collie was treated for 4 weeks with enrofloxacin because of a 3 month lasting mucopurulent nasal discharge and frequent sneezing. Symptoms disappeared thereafter until March 2002 when sneezing re-started, this time with bloody mucopurulent discharge. Anti-Aspergillus IgG serodiagnosis was positive. Antimycotic agents were

administered first under anesthesia using a catheter and endoscope control, and later orally. The dog was referred to the Animal Hospital at the University of Zurich in April 2002 because of lasting symptoms and weakness. Until July 2002, the animal was treated with antibiotics for potential secondary infections with bacteria. After biopsy, a circumscribed osteomyelitis was discovered. As conservative therapy failed, a rhinotomy with opening of the sinus frontalis was proposed. The owner refused and a homeopathic therapy was started.

Homeopathic anamnesis

August 2002, home visit: Despite barking violently when the doorbell rang, the collie welcomed me friendly, turned its back towards me and wanted to be petted. Although eye contact was never made-, it constantly observed me.

Mucopurulent discharge was hanging from its left nostril, and according to the owner, was sometimes bloody. No other physical symptoms were apparent.

As it is very important to choose a deep acting constitutional remedy, the dog’s character needed to be assessed: According to the owner, it lacked self-confidence. It was always submissive, even around smaller dogs. The animal was scared and lamenting of new situations, but afterwards was very proud.

When the owner caressed his cat, the dog came between them and also wanted to be caressed. During thunderstorms it hid itself under the bed, even if it was being called. It was also scared of fireworks. The collie did not mingle with other dogs, but loved playing with its owner. As it was very sensitive, it walked away when being scolded.

The dog slept on both sides, often with mouth wide-opened and eyes closed. Sleeping time lasted much longer in the morning. It liked to

eat its food in several small portions, with consumption of fatty meat causing diarrhoea.

Family history is unknown.

August 2002:Lycopodium С ЧО’ООО, one dose

September 2002: Telephone

assessment: Within 24 hours after applying the remedy, the collie became very

sleepy for 10 days and suffered from very strong nasal discharge. Although the amount of discharge was equivalent to that before the therapy, the animal had much more energy and motivation. Its fur produced a strong odour.

October 2002: Telephone

assessment at 8 weeks after lycopodium: Since one week there was neither nasal discharge nor sneezing. The dog had much more energy. The strong odour from the fur disappeared.

December 2002: Telephone

assessment: There was no nasal discharge. It gained more self-confidence, and even began playing with other dogs.

June 2003: Telephone assessment: Nasal discharge was no longer evident. It can also eat fatty meat without suffering from diarrhoea.

Conclusion

After several months of therapy with antibiotic and antimycotic agents and

catheterisation of the frontal sinuses, a rhinothomy was suggested, which

the owner rejected due to uncertain prognosis.

One day after the application of a single dose of the constitutional homeopathic remedy, the collie was strongly aggravated by nasal symptoms for 10 days, but was thereafter, completely cured. The dog developed much more self-confidence. Consumption of fatty meat no longer caused diarrhoea, although thunderstorms still scared the animal.

Classical homeopathy is often a very successful therapy used against chronic infections that often do not respond to antimicrobiotic agents.
